The Pfizer Inc and BioNTech SE coronavirus vaccine has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for children aged 5 to 11 years, making it the first COVID-19 shot for young children in the United States.
Only a few other countries, including China, Cuba, and the United Arab Emirates, have approved COVID-19 vaccines for children this age or younger.
In the United States, approximately 58 percent of the population is fully vaccinated, trailing other countries such as the United Kingdom and France.
In May, the United States began administering the vaccine to adolescents aged 12 to 17.
