The UK announced the world's first new sanctions regime on 9 January 2025 to tackle crime syndicates of human trafficking and crack down on illicit finance that promotes such activities as part of measures to crack down on illegal migration.
The new restrictions are meant to target irregular migration and organized immigration crime, allowing authorities to target individuals and entities making dangerous journeys.
