  • Turkmenistan opened a new, futuristic "smart" city dedicated to its former president Kurbanguly Berdymukhamedov.
  • The city is named Arkadag, or protector.
  • The city designed for 70,000 is named Arkadag (Protector), a title used by former president Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, who led the country for 15 years before being succeeded last year by his son Serdar.
  • The first phase of Arkadag cost an estimated $3.3 billion.
  • All buildings in Arkadag are white and all apartment blocks are seven storeys high.
  • Only electric vehicles are allowed in the city.
