  • The country's first polarimetry mission will be launched by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).
  • This mission will launch on January 1, 2024.
  • In this, X-ray Polarimetry Satellite (XPoSat) will be sent with PSLV-C58.
  • This satellite will collect data of X rays and study black holes and neutron stars.
  • XPoSat will be the third observatory to be established in space after Aditya L1 and Astrosat.
  • It is India's first and the world's second polarimetry mission after NASA's Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer, launched in 2021.
  • XPoSat aims to study the 50 brightest sources in the universe.
  • These include pulsars, black hole X-ray binaries, active galactic nuclei, neutron stars and the remnants of non-thermal supernovae.
  • This satellite will be installed in a low earth orbit of 500-700 km.
  • It will collect data for 5 years.
  • This satellite and its payload have been built by U.R. Rao Satellite Center and Raman Research Institute.
  • Through this, we will be able to gather information about the geometry and mechanisms of distant sources in space.
