  • Murugan's book ‘Pyre’ has been included in the long list of 13 novels nominated for the International Booker Prize 2023. 
  • Novels from Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America are also in the running for the award.
  • Tamil writer Perumal Murugan's 'Pyre', a novel about caste-based hatred, has been selected for the International Booker prize longlist for 2023.
  • The book, a translation of his original Tamil work 'Pukkuli', tells the story of an inter-caste couple who elope, setting in motion a story of terrifying foreboding. The book was translated to English by Aniruddhan Vasudevan in 2016.
  • Each year a novel or short story collection written in any language that is translated into English and published in the UK or Ireland gets a prize worth £50,000 (Rs 50 lakh approximately), which is split equally between the author and translator.
  • Murugan, who had announced his own death as an author in 2015 before coming back to writing and resuming work, is the first Tamil writer to make it to the longlist of 13 works.
  • As of now, Murugan has authored 11 novels, 5 collections each of short stories and poetry and non-fictional works.
  • In 2022, Geetanjali Shree became the first Indian writer to win the International Booker Prize for her book 'Tomb of Sand', translated by Daisy Rockwell.
