Typhoon Nanmadol bore down on Japan's southernmost main island of Kyushu with the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warning of gales and high waves "like never experienced before".
Kyushu is the southernmost of the four islands that make up the main body of Japan and has a population of more than 13 million people.
The 14th typhoon of the season, classified as a super typhoon by the U.S. Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center.
Typhoon Nanmadol has brought winds of at least 180 km/h (112mph) and some areas could see 500mm (20 inches) of rainfall.
