  • Typhoon Nanmadol bore down on Japan's southernmost main island of Kyushu with the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) warning of gales and high waves "like never experienced before".
  • Kyushu is the southernmost of the four islands that make up the main body of Japan and has a population of more than 13 million people.
  • The 14th typhoon of the season, classified as a super typhoon by the U.S. Navy's Joint Typhoon Warning Center.
  • Typhoon Nanmadol has brought winds of at least 180 km/h (112mph) and some areas could see 500mm (20 inches) of rainfall.
