  • A recent outbreak of shigellosis has raised public health concerns in Kerala. The highly contagious bacterial infection, caused by Shigella bacteria, primarily spreads through the faecal-oral route via contaminated food, water, or direct contact with infected persons. Poor sanitation and hygiene practices significantly increase transmission risk. Children under five, elderly individuals, and immunocompromised persons are most vulnerable.
  • Symptoms include bloody or mucous diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, fever, and tenesmus. While mild cases are often self-limiting, severe infections may require antibiotics. Prevention relies on improved hygiene, safe drinking water, and proper sanitation. The outbreak highlights the need for continued focus on public health infrastructure and awareness to control diarrhoeal diseases in the state.
