Savitri Bai Phule's birth anniversary is celebrated every year on 3 January in the country.
Savitri Bai Phule was born in the year 1831 in Naigaon, Maharashtra.
She was also a poet, considered a 'pioneer of modern Marathi poetry'.
Savitri Bai Phule and Jyotirao Phule together started the literacy mission in India in the year 1854-55.
In the social and educational history of India, Mahatma Jyotiba Phule and his wife founded the Satyashodhak Samaj.
The aim of this organization was to start Satyashodhak marriage system in which no dowry was taken.
He also established the country's first farmers' school.
In the year 1852, she established a school for Dalit girls.
Their objective was to organize widow remarriage in the society, eradicate untouchability, liberate women, and educate Dalit women.
In 2014, the name of Pune University was changed to Savitribai Phule University in her honour.
Satya Shodhak Samaj was founded in the year 1873 by Jyoti Rao Phule, husband of Savitri Bai Phule.
