  • Rishi Sunak has become Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
  • Rishi Sunak is the first person of Indian origin to become the British prime minister. He is the fifth Conservative party leader elected to the top post in the past 6 years.
  • He was elected unopposed as the new leader of the governing Conservative Party on Monday, following Penny Mordaunt's withdrawal from the race.
  • The 42-year-old served as the Parliament Under-Secretary in former Prime Minister Theresa May’s second term.
  • He served as Treasury Chief Secretary under the Boris Johnson government in 2019. Sunak was promoted to Chancellor of the Exchequer in 2020, considered Britain’s second most important position.
