  • Recently the United Nations peacekeeping mission in this country has ended after 10 years.
  • The reason for the end of this peacekeeping mission is said to be the insufficient number of peacekeepers compared to the increasing incidents of terrorism.
  • The UN mission, which began in 2013, was aimed at bringing peace and stability to the conflict-torn nation.
  • Instability in Mali began with the Tuareg rebellion in 2012.
  • The military government in Mali, installed after a May 2021 coup, has requested the withdrawal of the UN peacekeeping mission, saying it has been ineffective in stopping raids by jihadists, especially in the north of the country.
  • The UN Security Council then adopted a resolution in June, authorizing withdrawal by December 31, 2023.
