In December 2023, the President has approved the Bill appointing the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners.
This bill has been passed by the Parliament in the winter session.
Under the 'Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Bill, 2023, the appointment will be made by the Selection Committee.
There is a provision to form a 'Search Committee' for the process of considering the selection committee.
This search committee will be headed by the Union Law Minister.
The said Bill repeals the 1991 Act and Provides for the appointment process and conditions of services for C.E.C. And E.C.
It was passed by the Lok Sabha on 21 December.
Rajya Sabha had passed the bill on 12 December.
