  • In December 2023, the President has approved the Bill appointing the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners.
  • This bill has been passed by the Parliament in the winter session.
  • Under the 'Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Bill, 2023, the appointment will be made by the Selection Committee.
  • There is a provision to form a 'Search Committee' for the process of considering the selection committee.
  • This search committee will be headed by the Union Law Minister.
  • The said Bill repeals the 1991 Act and Provides for the appointment process and conditions of services for C.E.C. And E.C.
  • It was passed by the Lok Sabha on 21 December.
  • Rajya Sabha had passed the bill on 12 December.
