  • Recently, Eurasian otter has been seen in Kerala for the first time.
  • This Eurasian otter was seen in Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala.
  • Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Idukki district of Kerala.
  • The Eurasian otter is a semiaquatic mammal native to Eurasia.
  • It is listed as Near Endangered on the IUCN Red List.
  • It is placed in Appendix 1 of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
  • Apart from this, it has also been included in Schedule 1 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
  • Eurasian otters are shy and nocturnal and are found near small rivers in the interior of forests.
  • They do their hunting at night.
  • Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary was established in the year 1984.
