  • Recently the Central Government has increased the disability categories to 5.
  • Earlier this number of categories was 3.
  • This decision was announced by Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh.
  • Earlier there were only three categories in which reservation was given to persons with disabilities.
  • These 3 categories were as follows -
  • First, blindness and low vision.
  • Second, deafness and difficulty in hearing.
  • Third, Cerebral Palsy, cured leprosy, dwarfism, acid attack victims.
  • Now there are 2 new categories as follows – Autism, Intellectual Disability, Specific Learning Disability and Mental Illness and section Multiple Disability.
  • These categories of disabled have been increased by the Department of Disabled People's Empowerment.
  • The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities is working under the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
  • Currently, 4% reservation is being given to the disabled in reservation in central government services.
