Saima Wajed is a mental health expert from Bangladesh.
Saima Wajed is the daughter of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Recently she has been elected as the Regional Director of the South-East Asia Region of the World Health Organization.
Saima defeated Dr. Shambhu Prasad Acharya of Nepal in the election for this post.
This election was held at WHO in New Delhi. It was done in the regional committee meeting.
Saima Wajed has been appointed for 4 years.
Saima Wajed is the second representative of Bangladesh to reach this position.
Before this, Syed Mudassar Ali of Bangladesh had held this post.
His tenure will begin from February 1, 2024.
Presently Poonam Khetrapal Singh of India is the regional director.
WHO In the regional director election, the health ministers of 11 countries in Southeast Asia - Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, South Korea, Indonesia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand and East Timor - vote.
