  • Inland Waterways Development Council was held in Kolkata in January 2024.
  • This was the first meeting of the Inland Waterways Development Council.
  • The meeting was presided over by Union Ports, Shipping and Waterways Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
  • In this meeting, a commitment was made to invest Rs 45 thousand crore for the development of river cruise tourism in the country.
  • In this ambitious allocation, an estimated Rs 35 thousand crore has been earmarked for cruise ships.
  • Whereas Rs 10 thousand crore will be invested for the development of cruise terminal infrastructure by the year 2047.
  • Sonowal also launched 'Green Boating' Guidelines and 'River Cruise Tourism Roadmap, 2047' at the meeting.
