Recently Hiralal Samaria has been appointed as the Chief Information Commissioner of the country.
Hiralal Samaria has been appointed as the Chief Information Commissioner of the country in November, 2023.
He was appointed by a committee headed by the Prime Minister.
Apart from the Prime Minister, this committee includes the leader of the largest party in the Lok Sabha and a cabinet minister.
Hiralal Samaria was administered the oath by President Draupadi Murmu.
Hiralal Samaria was posted on the post of Information Commissioner before becoming the Chief Information Commissioner.
Hiralal Samaria is the first Dalit Chief Information Commissioner of the country.
He has replaced Yashvardhan Kumar Sinha on this post.
Yashvardhan Kumar Sinha retired on 3 October.
The Central Information Commission has been constituted under the Right to Information Act, 2005 with effect from October, 2005.
The Commission is headed by the Chief Information Commissioner.
There can be a maximum of 10 Information Commissioners.
It is a non-constitutional body.
