Rajagopala Chidambaram, former Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and Principal Scientific Advisor to the Indian government, passed away at 88, having played a pivotal role in India’s nuclear tests in 1974 and 1998.
Chidambaram was integral to India's nuclear program, including the 1974 "Smiling Buddha" test, which made India the sixth nation to test a nuclear device.
Chidambaram was awarded the Padma Shri in 1975 and the Padma Vibhushan in 1999.
