Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the New Pamban Bridge in Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu on the occasion of Ram Navami, which has made access for pilgrims to Rameswaram easier.
This will replace a 110-year-old structure that once connected Rameswaram to the Indian mainland.
The bridge consists of 99 spans and has a 72.5-meter-long vertical lift span that can rise up to 17 meters. It opens in just 5 minutes and closes in 3 minutes, allowing maritime and rail traffic to run simultaneously.
Trains on the new bridge can run at a speed of 80 km/h and it can withstand speeds of up to 160 km/h. The maximum speed on the old bridge was 10 km/h.
This bridge was constructed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) at a cost of over 550 crore rupees, incorporating technical expertise from IIT Chennai, IIT Bombay, and TYPSA.
