  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the New Pamban Bridge in Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu on the occasion of Ram Navami, which has made access for pilgrims to Rameswaram easier.
  • This will replace a 110-year-old structure that once connected Rameswaram to the Indian mainland.
  • The bridge consists of 99 spans and has a 72.5-meter-long vertical lift span that can rise up to 17 meters. It opens in just 5 minutes and closes in 3 minutes, allowing maritime and rail traffic to run simultaneously.
  • Trains on the new bridge can run at a speed of 80 km/h and it can withstand speeds of up to 160 km/h. The maximum speed on the old bridge was 10 km/h.
  • This bridge was constructed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) at a cost of over 550 crore rupees, incorporating technical expertise from IIT Chennai, IIT Bombay, and TYPSA.
