Scientists from the ICAR-Directorate of Floricultural Research have discovered a new blossom midge species, Contarinia icardiflores sp. nov., attacking Jasminum sambac, a commercially important jasmine crop. The research, led by Dr. D. M. Firake, found the pest causing significant bud damage and economic losses in floriculture.
Though morphologically similar to Contarinia maculipennis, the new species is genetically distinct, confirmed through COI gene sequencing. The pest completes its life cycle within 16–21 days, enabling rapid population growth and severe infestation. Belonging to the genus Contarinia (family Cecidomyiidae), it poses a serious emerging threat to jasmine farmers and exporters.
