  • Nepal has become a founding member of the International Big Cats Alliance.
  • During the launch of the alliance under India’s initiative, Minister for Energy Shakti Bahadur Basnet handed over the letter mentioning Nepal will be associated with the alliance as a founding member to Indian Minister for Forest and Climate Change Bhupendra Yadav.
  • Nepal successfully achieved its goal of doubling the tiger population by 2022 as per its commitment made during the first tiger summit in 2010 in St Petersburg.
  • The India-funded initiative aims at the conservation of seven big cats namely tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard, cheetah, jaguar and puma.
  • The International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) was launched by the Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi on April 9, 2023, for the conservation of seven big cat species.
