The Moidams of Assam have been awarded the prestigious 43rd UNESCO World Heritage Site tag in the cultural category, recognizing their historical significance.
The Moidams are nearly seven hundred years old, consisting of hollow vaults of brick and stone that contain the remains of kings and royals.
They are the first cultural site and the third overall site from North East India to be inscribed on the World Heritage list.
Culture and Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat praised the inclusion as a significant achievement for North-East India and Assam, highlighting its potential for conservation and tourism.
He also noted that India has six more proposals pending with the World Heritage Committee and a total of 57 proposals with UNESCO.
