  • Iran's First Vice President Mohammad Mokhabar was appointed Acting President of the Islamic Republic on 20 May 2024 following the death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash in the northwestern region of the country. 
  • Mokhabar, 68, has largely stayed away from the spotlight compared to other political leaders in Iran's Shiite theocracy. 
  • He can serve as acting president for about 50 days before the presidential election in Iran.
  • Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei announced Mokhabar's appointment in a condolence message issued on Raisi's death in the accident on 19 May 2024. Mokhabar has held key positions in the government.
