  • The Maharashtra Assembly unanimously passed the 'Power Criminal Law (Maharashtra Amendment) Act, which provides for the death penalty for rape.
  • It is the second Indian state, after Andhra Pradesh, to introduce the death penalty for the offenses of grievous rape and gang rape, with the approval of the bill.
  • It has also prescribed a time limit of 30 days for completion of investigation for such offense, from the moment of filing of the complaint.
  • The law also includes rules for dealing with cyber- and social media-based crimes against women.
