  • Recently, the Maharashtra Assembly has passed a proposal to include the Chief Minister under the ambit of Lokayukta.
  • Maharashtra has become the first state in the country to bring the Chief Minister under the ambit of Lokayukta.
  • Maharashtra Legislative Council passed the Lokayukta Bill 2022 with some suggestions.
  • This brings the Chief Minister and the Council of Ministers under the ambit of the anti-corruption Lokayukta
  • According to the bill, the Lokayukta will have to seek the approval of the Assembly before initiating any investigation against the Chief Minister and before bringing the resolution before the session of the House.
  • Such a proposal will be passed by at least two-thirds of the total members of the Legislative Assembly.
  • The bill also states that the Lokayukta will not investigate cases involving allegations of corruption against the Chief Minister on matters relating to internal security or public order.
  • According to the Bill, the case against the Chief Minister, any other cabinet minister and elected representatives will have to be completed within one year from the date of the complaint.
