  • The waters of Lake Victoria, shared by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, have turned persistently toxic green due to worsening algal blooms. Scientists warn that decades of nutrient pollution from sewage, fertilisers and runoff have pushed the lake beyond a critical ecological threshold.
  • Eutrophication has led to cyanobacterial dominance, with toxins like microcystin exceeding safety limits in several regions. Sediment studies show the imbalance began nearly a century ago, intensifying after the 1990s. The crisis threatens drinking water, fisheries and livelihoods of nearly 47 million people dependent on the lake.
