The Central Government on Wednesday approved the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium, appointing Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Prasanna B Varale as a judge of the Supreme Court.
After this appointment, the Supreme Court approval number has reached 34 judges.
On January 19, the five-judge collegium led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud had selected Prasanna B Varale to fill the place of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul after his retirement.
Warale, who belongs to the Scheduled Caste, is ranked sixth in the combined seniority of all high court judges.
He was appointed as a judge of the Bombay High Court on July 18, 2008.
He was elevated as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court on 15 October 2022.
