  • The Central Government on Wednesday approved the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium, appointing Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Prasanna B Varale as a judge of the Supreme Court.
  • After this appointment, the Supreme Court approval number has reached 34 judges.
  • On January 19, the five-judge collegium led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud had selected Prasanna B Varale to fill the place of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul after his retirement.
  • Warale, who belongs to the Scheduled Caste, is ranked sixth in the combined seniority of all high court judges.
  • He was appointed as a judge of the Bombay High Court on July 18, 2008.
  • He was elevated as the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court on 15 October 2022.
