  • Japan has introduced the world’s first dedicated freight-only Shinkansen, repurposing the E3 series bullet train for high-speed cargo transport. Operated by East Japan Railway Company, the modified train can carry up to 1,000 boxes or approximately 17.4 tonnes of cargo while maintaining speeds of up to 275 kmph. It operates on the Tohoku line between Morioka and Tokyo, covering the distance in just over three hours.
  • The service focuses on high-value, time-sensitive goods such as fresh seafood, agricultural produce, dairy products, semiconductors, and medical supplies. By integrating cargo into existing high-speed rail infrastructure, Japan has created an efficient bridge between slow conventional rail freight and expensive air cargo. This innovative initiative enhances logistics sustainability and supply chain efficiency.
