  • Iraq announced on Sunday that the U.S.-led coalition has completed its withdrawal from military bases located within the country’s federal territory, excluding the semi-autonomous Kurdistan region.
  • The military committee overseeing the process stated that all coalition advisory forces have vacated official federal bases, which are now fully under the control of Iraqi security forces.
  • Following this withdrawal, Iraq will move into a phase of bilateral security cooperation with the United States.
  • Most coalition troops had already departed under a 2024 agreement between Baghdad and Washington, which set timelines for the mission’s conclusion—by end of 2025 in federal Iraq and by September 2026 in Kurdistan.
Coalition forces had been stationed in Iraq and Syria since 2014 to combat the Islamic State group after it seized large territories in both countries.
