  • Almost 15 years after its request to join the alliance, Iran formally became a full member of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
  • Iran has joined the SCO as the ninth member.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the SCO Summit virtually and conveyed his best wishes to President Ebrahim Raisi.
  • PM Modi highlighted the growing interest of other countries in joining the SCO, emphasizing the organization’s importance. 
  • The interest shown by nations to become part of the SCO demonstrates the organization’s relevance and influence on regional and global affairs.
  • The SCO was founded at a summit in Shanghai in 2001 by the presidents of Russia, China, the Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. 
  • India and Pakistan became its permanent members in 2017.
