  • International Literacy Day recognised by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is observed on September 8, every year. 
  • Since 1967, this day has been observed to remind the world about the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity, and human rights and to advance the literacy agenda towards a more literate and sustainable society.
  • This year's theme is "Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces".
  • According to the report published by the National Survey of India, the Literacy Rate of India in 2022 is 77.7 per cent. The literacy rate in 2011 was 73%.
  • According to figures till 2018, India's male literacy rate stood at 82.4% and female literacy rate stood at 65.8%.
