  • This is the 99th edition of International Chess Day, which is celebrated on July 20.
  • The history of World Chess Day dates back to the year 1942 when UNESCO established International Chess Day to honour the founding of the International Chess Federation, FIDE by its French abbreviation in the year 1996. 
  • FIDE is an international organisation that brings along various chess federations and organisations across the world and organises and serves chess tournaments.
  • The theme for World Chess Day 2022 was “Women in Chess.”
  • The longest game of Chess can last about 5,900 moves based on the various movement combinations.
  • The longest chess game in recorded history lasted 269 moves but ended in a draw.
  • An American man named Frank Marshall was the first ever to defeat a Soviet player in an international chess tournament back in 1924 in New York City.
