  • India’s life expectancy at birth has increased up to 69.7 in the 2015-2019 period, data from the sample regist ration system (SRS) shows. 
  • The country’s life expectancy at birth, which has inched up after 10 years, is still well below the global average of 72.6.
  • The gap between life expectancy at birth and life expectancy at age one or age five is biggest in states with the highest infant mortality rate (IMR) – Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.
  • India has added 20 years to its life expectancy at birth from 49.7 in 1970-75 to 69.7 in 2015-2019.
  • In Madhya Pradesh, which has the highest IMR of 43
