India’s Total Fertility Rate (TFR) declined to 1.9 in 2023, the first drop in two years, according to the Sample Registration Survey (SRS) Statistical Report 2023. This places the country below the replacement level fertility rate of 2.1 children per woman, signaling a major demographic shift. The Crude Birth Rate (CBR) also fell from 19.1 in 2022 to 18.4 in 2023. Bihar reported the highest CBR at 25.8, while Tamil Nadu had the lowest at 12. Among major states, Bihar also recorded the highest TFR at 2.8, while Delhi reported the lowest at 1.2.
