India remains a key player in the global wool industry, with 77.4 million sheep, ranking second in population and ninth in wool production worldwide. In FY24, the country produced 33.69 million kg of wool, with Rajasthan contributing 16,013.5 thousand kg (47.53% of national output) thanks to breeds like Marwari and Chokla.
Other major producers include Jammu & Kashmir (7,770 thousand kg), Karnataka (6,472 thousand kg), Telangana (4,422 thousand kg), and Gujarat (2,083 thousand kg). Growth trends show Punjab leading with a 22.04% AGR, followed by Tamil Nadu (17.19%) and Gujarat (3.20%). The sector supports rural livelihoods and feeds the textile and carpet industries.
