  • India and South Africa opposed the China-led IFD proposal at the WTO.
  • India has expressed its opposition to IFD before, which cannot happen without consensus among the members of the WTO.
  • The IFD proposal was first opposed by India in 2017 and is still not supported.
  • The IFD's main objective is to facilitate investment processes and overstep borders, but it has been accused of paying more attention to Chinese investments and leveraging the respective countries' imperial wealth funds.
  • The chances of the IFD being approved by the WTO in its current form have been reduced due to opposition from India and South Africa, opening it up to new possibilities for revision and consultation.
