  • In competition with 17 food items from across India with a Geographical Indication (GI) status -- including the Rasogulla, Bikaneri Bhujiya and Ratlami Sev -- the Hyderabadi Haleem beat all of them to bag the 'Most Popular GI' award in the food category.
  • The aromatic stew-like dish is made with pounded meat, lentils, wheat along with spices, and is most popular during Ramzan.
  • In 2010 the Hyderabadi Haleem was first accorded the GI status.
  • While this expired in December 2019, the registrar of Geographical Indication renewed the tag earlier this year. The renewed GI status is now valid for 10 years.
  • If we talk about other Telangana items which were given GI Tag, they include Nirmal Toys and Crafts, Nirmal Furniture, Nirmal Paintings, Gadwal Sarees and Banaganpalle Mangoes.
