The government stated that India’s fisheries and aquaculture sector has seen substantial growth, with fish production rising to 198 lakh tonnes in 2024–25 from 95 lakh tonnes in 2013–14. The sector supports the livelihoods of nearly 3 crore fishers and fish farmers and generates large-scale employment across the value chain. India is currently the world’s second-largest fish producer, contributing 8% to global production, ranks second in aquaculture output, leads in shrimp production and exports, and is the second-largest producer in capture fisheries. Average aquaculture productivity has increased to 4.77 tonnes per hectare, while seafood exports reached 16.98 lakh tonnes worth ₹62,408 crore during 2023–24.
