France becomes the first nation to constitutionally guarantee abortion rights, enshrining women's freedom to choose in the country's constitution.
French President Macron's administration proposed amending Article 34 of the constitution to ensure the right to abortion, aiming to make it irreversible and protect reproductive rights.
The National Assembly and Senate overwhelmingly backed the bill, achieving the necessary three-fifths majority for constitutional change, despite initial resistance in the Senate.
The move comes amid global efforts to safeguard women's reproductive rights, following concerns raised by the US Supreme Court's decision to reverse Roe v. Wade.
