Magnus Carlsen won the first officially recognised Freestyle Chess World Championship by defeating Fabiano Caruana 2.5–1.5 in the final held at Weissenhaus. A dramatic comeback in game three proved decisive, shifting momentum in Carlsen’s favour.
The Freestyle (Fischer Random) format reduces opening memorisation and rewards creativity and calculation. With this victory, Carlsen extends his tally to 21 world titles across formats. The event, recognised by FIDE, marks a historic milestone for the growing format. The tournament carried a $300,000 prize pool, with Carlsen earning $100,000 and qualifying for the 2027 championship.
