  • The Election Commission (EC) on Monday (October 10, 2022) alloted the "mashaal" (flaming torch) as an election symbol to the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction of Shiv Sena, while the Eknath Shinde camp has been asked to submit a fresh list of three symbols.
  • The EC also alloted "Shiv Sena - Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray" as the party name for the Thackeray faction, while "Balasahebanchi Shiv Sena" was given as the party name for the Shinde camp.
  • The Commission noted that the 'flaming torch' symbol was earlier allotted to the Samata Party, which was derecognised in 2004. The Commission said it had decided to list the 'flaming torch' as a 'free symbol' following the request from the Thackeray faction.
