  • The Delhi government, in collaboration with IIT Madras, is testing photocatalytic “smog-eating” coatings on roads to combat air pollution. These coatings use titanium dioxide (TiO₂), which reacts with sunlight to break down harmful pollutants like nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons.
  • This process, called photocatalysis, helps purify air and surfaces. The technology offers a passive and scalable solution for pollution control in urban areas. If successful, it could complement existing measures and significantly reduce pollution levels in traffic-heavy cities like Delhi.
