·         David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian have been jointly awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Medicine for discoveries on the receptors for temperature and touch. Both Nobel Prize-winning scientists are from the United States.

·         The winners were announced by the Secretary-General of the Nobel Committee, Thomas Perlman.

·         The coveted prize comes with a gold medal and 10 million Swedish kronor (over $1.14 million). The prize money comes from a will left by the prize's creator, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, who died in 1895.

·         In 2020, the Nobel Prize went to three scientists who discovered the liver-damaging hepatitis C virus, a breakthrough that eventually led to tests to treat deadly diseases and prevent the disease from spreading through blood banks.
