  • Mahamat Idris Deby Itno came to power in 2021 after seizing control with the support of army generals following the death of his father, President Idriss Deby. President Idriss Deby, who ruled Chad for three decades as a dictator, was killed by rebels in Northern Chad in 2021.
  • With his victory in the 2024 presidential election, Mahamat Idris Deby Itno is set to continue ruling Chad for another six years, further legitimizing his leadership and extending the Deby family's long-standing grip on power in the country.
