  • Bonalu is celebrated in Hyderabad especially in parts of the Old city, usually during Ashada Masam which falls in July/August.
  • Bonam in Telugu literally means 'sweet food in a pot' which is an offering to the Mother Goddess.
  • Women dressed in traditional attire carry 'Bonam' on their heads and offer bhog to the deity in temples.
  • Bonalu involves the worship of Kali in its various forms such as Mysamma, Pochamma, Doklamma, Pedamma, Poleramma, Anklamma, Maremma, etc.
  • Special pujas are performed for Goddess Yellamma on the first and last day of this festival.
