Indian lifter Ajaya Babu Valluri claimed a gold medal in the men’s 79kg category at the 30th Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Ahmedabad. He lifted a combined total of 335 kg, narrowly surpassing Malaysia’s Muhammad Erry (333 kg) and Nigeria’s Adedapo Adeleke (306 kg). With this victory, Valluri qualified for next year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. In the women’s 69kg event, Harjinder Kaur secured a bronze medal with a total lift of 222 kg. The championships feature over 300 athletes from 31 nations.
