This article examines the impact of welfare schemes implemented by the Centre and State governments on voting patterns in Jharkhand during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
It highlights the difference in outreach and electoral influence of central and state-sponsored schemes.
Current Context:
Welfare schemes have been a critical tool for governments in influencing electoral outcomes.
In Jharkhand, a larger proportion of beneficiaries of welfare schemes voted for the INDIA bloc as compared to non-beneficiaries.
The outreach and impact of central schemes, like PDS and MGNREGS, are found to be more extensive than state-sponsored schemes.
Outreach of Youth-Centric Schemes:
Awareness of schemes targeting youth is relatively low.
Only 25% of respondents were aware of the Mukhya Mantri Rojgar Srijan Yojana, and merely 16% showed interest in availing its benefits.
Key Observations:
Union Government Schemes:
Schemes like PDS (67% beneficiaries) and MGNREGS (22% beneficiaries) had a significant influence.
Beneficiaries of these schemes predominantly voted for the INDIA bloc.
State Government Schemes:
Muft Bijli Yojana had a higher reach among state schemes (55% beneficiaries).
Beneficiaries of state schemes also inclined toward the INDIA bloc, but the impact was comparatively limited.
Electoral Implications:
Welfare schemes continue to play a pivotal role in shaping voting behavior.
The INDIA bloc's success in Jharkhand is tied to the extensive reach of welfare schemes like PDS and MGNREGS.
However, limited awareness and interest in youth-centric schemes point to an area requiring attention for future electoral strategies.
