The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a premier domestic Twenty20 (T20) cricket tournament in India, organized annually by the IPL Governing Council under the aegis of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Since its inception in 2008, the IPL has grown into one of the most-watched cricket tournaments in the world and is the second-highest paying sporting league globally.
The IPL combines high-intensity cricket, entertainment, and strategic franchise management, attracting international players and viewers from across the globe. As of 2025, the league consists of ten teams representing ten Indian cities, with a total of fifteen teams having participated over the years, including some defunct franchises.
Format of the IPL
The tournament is played in a group stage followed by playoffs format. Initially, the league followed a double round-robin system, where each team played every other team twice, once at home and once away. However, from 2022 onwards, with the expansion to ten teams, the league format was modified:
