Why in News?

The Karnataka government has sought action against Paschim Banga Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Compound Sodium Lactate Injection I.P (Ringer’s Lactate), following recent maternal deaths in Ballari District Hospital. The state has requested the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) to investigate the Standard Quality certification issued to the company.

Background: Between November 9 and 11, 2023, four maternal deaths occurred at Ballari District Hospital following caesarean sections. The women were administered Ringer’s Lactate, supplied by Paschim Banga Pharmaceuticals. The hospital had conducted 34 such operations during those days, and seven of them faced complications, with four women unfortunately passing away.

Key Developments:

  • A review by specialists from Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences found no negligence by doctors, confirming that patient care protocols were followed.
  • The Karnataka State Medical Supplies Corporation Ltd. had frozen the use of the batches supplied by Paschim Banga Pharmaceuticals in March 2023.
  • The Health Department has requested the DCGI to investigate the quality of the Ringer’s Lactate batch and take appropriate action against the manufacturer.

Implications:

  • If proven, the case could lead to stricter regulations for pharmaceutical companies and greater scrutiny of drug certifications.
  • The investigation will aim to prevent such incidents in the future and ensure better patient safety protocols across hospitals.

Conclusion: The Karnataka government's request for action highlights concerns over the quality of medical supplies in hospitals. The ongoing investigation will play a crucial role in determining the cause of the maternal deaths and in safeguarding the health of patients in the future.
